Should You Repair or Replace Your Computer?

This question comes up constantly, and the honest answer is “it depends,” but that's an unsatisfying thing to read, so here's what it actually depends on.
The Rule of Thumb We Actually Use
A common rule of thumb across the repair industry: if a repair costs more than roughly half of what a comparable replacement would cost, replacement usually makes more sense, especially on a machine that's already a few years old. It's a starting point, not a formula, because it doesn't account for how much you'd have to spend to set a new machine up the way the old one was.
Repair Almost Always Wins When
- It's a single component failure, a drive, a power supply, RAM, a screen hinge, on a machine that's otherwise healthy and under about 4–5 years old.
- The computer runs software or has a setup that would be genuinely painful to recreate: specialized business software, a specific configuration, licensed programs tied to that machine.
- The data on it matters and hasn't been backed up. Getting the machine working again is often the fastest, safest way to get the files off it.
Replace Usually Wins When
- It's a motherboard or CPU failure on a machine that's already several years old; that repair often costs close to what a comparable new machine would.
- Multiple things are failing around the same time. One repair is a repair; three in six months is a machine telling you something.
- The computer already felt slow or dated before this particular problem showed up. Fixing the immediate issue just gets you back to a computer you weren't happy with.
- It's old enough to no longer receive security updates from Microsoft. An unpatched, internet-connected computer is a real risk, not just an inconvenience.
The Hidden Costs of “Just Buying New”
A repair quote and a new-computer price tag aren't actually comparable numbers, because the new machine doesn't come with your old setup already on it. The real cost of replacing includes:

None of that means replacing is the wrong call when it's the right call. It means the comparison isn't “$400 repair vs. $600 new computer,” it's “$400 repair vs. $600 plus a weekend getting everything set up again.”
The Gray Zone
A 3–5 year old laptop with a failing battery or one bad part, otherwise running fine, is the genuinely hard case. It usually comes down to how the machine already felt before this happened: if it was keeping up fine, repair; if you were already thinking “I should probably replace this soon,” this is often the moment that decision was waiting for.
